Art education in Brazil
Art education in Brazil has undergone numerous changes since its insertion in the official school curriculum, implemented by the Law of Directives and Bases of National Education (LDB). In the last decades, art has become increasingly disseminated in the educational environment, with pedagogical support materials and school experiences essential for the socio-emotional and citizen education of children and adolescents.
However, at the beginning of the process of inserting artistic education in schools, Art was not considered a discipline. This ended up preventing many students from deepening their artistic and aesthetic sense, which are currently essential skills for training.
With the creation of undergraduate courses in Arts, several professionals were prepared to master the different languages of this field of knowledge. From the inclusion of artistic education in schools, the teaching of the discipline began to develop a series of important skills in students, such as creativity, critical thinking and emotional intelligence.
Nowadays, artistic knowledge is considered essential for school education. The teacher, in this case, must choose an approach that relates the different knowledge of Art with the reality and the level of education of children and young people, making the teaching-learning process broad in relation to the cultural, cognitive and visual repertoire of students .
The importance of including artistic activities in classes
Currently, Art teaching is based on several studies that structure the educational curriculum, establishing basic guidelines that guide pedagogical practice across the country. The training in the discipline was defined to meet the regional diversity, culture and politics existing in the country, creating conditions for students to have access to knowledge and the exercise of citizenship.
The field of art knowledge is divided into four languages: Visual Arts, Dance, Music and Theater. Each artistic language proposes general objectives, content and evaluation criteria to continue the previous cycles previously studied by the students.
Art in education awakens the capacity for creation and helps students to express feelings, interacting in a way to work social insertion in a broad way in school institutions. Thus, the discipline goes far beyond recreation and leisure, being part of the natural process of cognitive and motor development of children and young people.
See, below, other contributions that art education offers to different levels of education.
Acquire new skills
Through Art, students develop cognition and acquire new skills. Artistic activities act as stimulators and facilitators of learning, both inside and outside the classroom. The discipline also allows students to learn through associations, that is, connecting concepts, references and knowledge already absorbed in previous grades.
See different perspectives and sensations
Art also allows students to see different perspectives and feelings about the same subject. Generally, artistic activities are related to thinking and adopting a critical attitude towards society. In addition, children and young people have the opportunity to observe the creative process, question and analyze rationally and intelligently the art productions from different eras and cultures.
Working with creativity
Creativity is a human capacity that can be improved through teaching art in schools. Activities allow students to think outside the box and create alternatives for solving a problem, helping students to think and develop. For that, students should be encouraged from an early age to express different ideas and to have a free thought, and art teaching has precisely this objective.
It is also through Art that the student begins to expose and exercise his emotions to the world around him, working on issues about his emotional state in a more elaborate way. In this process, intelligence and affective and emotional reasoning are involved, which are essential for the good development of the school curriculum.
Implementing art in education
Art education offers students a general understanding of the application of the discipline, its methods, techniques and pedagogical proposals. In this sense, children and young people can develop not only cognitively, but also socially and emotionally. Therefore, Art should be worked in the classroom in the best possible way and in accordance with the official guidelines of education.
Currently, knowledge is based on a triangular methodology: making art, Art History and reading works. With this, it is possible to explore the different forms of expression, analyze the works and make associations with history through a reflective study.
Integrating Art with other disciplines is also interesting to increase students’ motivation and school performance. In this sense, training becomes an instrument that boosts self-knowledge, the communication of emotions, the unconscious and, also, the understanding that there are different perspectives and points of view about the world and citizenship.
Working with art in education is fundamental for the formation of children and young people. For artistic activities to take place in the best way, the school must make it clear to the students’ parents how important the discipline is to the teaching-learning process. Especially because it is through art that students are able to see the world critically, improving language and emotional intelligence.
