One thing that I think is important in contemporary groups, especially those that are based in universities or have university students, is boldness. How many times do we hear about the same presentation lines, with shows with the same theme?
That is why I was very pleased when my dancer friend Guego Anunciação (wonderful, by the way!) Showed me this initiative by the Contemporary Dance Group of the Federal University of Bahia (GDC of UFBA), which deals with … sex! Not love, not feeling, just the carnal pleasure, naked and raw, and the outbursts of excitement (and even violence) that accompany it.
The name of the presentation says it all: Cuspe, Paetê and Lantejoula. Who signs this work is Lulu Pugliese and Lucas Valentim, who has six dancers from the GDC of UFBA – which celebrates its 60 years, by the way! I have already seen some work by dance groups from UFBA and, normally, they do not escape the streak and deliver exactly what they promise. The choreographies are very different and use super daring dynamics to integrate dancers, music and concept – women carrying men, nakedness in the show, sounds emitted by the dancers during the movements … It’s another ‘trip’!
It is worth remembering that the UFBA Dance School is the first higher education institution in dance in Brazil, so the vanguard is with itself!
