I know it’s been over a week that I promise to launch this post here, but wow, there is work to be done and time is lacking this 2017! But behold, I can tell you a little about my experience with contemporary dance and, more specifically, about improvisation in dance – which can be any style, ok?
I took advantage of the ballet holidays to play in a style that I am not so close to, but that I love to accompany, which is the contemporary. But what I didn’t know was that the teacher, the dancer, researcher and my friend Guego Anunciação, decided to do more than just pass step technique and do some experiments with the lucky ones who decided to take the classes.
We play a lot with the voice, between sounds and words. And then we move on to the difficult part: improvisation. As well? Just like that. Turn on the music (or not!) And dance the way it works. And anything goes, until you stand still. One thing that few know: improvisation says a LOT of your repertoire as a dancer. It is when you let go of the combinations of a choreography, the steps flow in a very different way. It gives a damn fear, but there comes a time when the mind pops automatically starts to search for what makes the most sense for the body. In kids: you get the hang of it.
“I, as a classical dancer, found this way to think about my body research, really. How I can combine improvisation with a repertoire that I already had of classical ballet and other experiences that came later with contemporary dance. Besides, it is difficult to find this improvisation technique in the ballet space, where students usually work as interpreters conditioned to a choreography. I think that improvisation is very liberating in that sense, it opens up possibilities for the dancer to have access to other repertoires ”, said Guego with great propriety.
I think the magic word there is technical. Just like any step, you need a technique to improvise in the best possible way to think quickly about the ligaments, do what is most natural for the body and still churn choreographically speaking. In a way, it is still an exercise ????
